Daybreak: A Guide to Overcoming Temptation by Nathan Ward is a quick read. But quick does not make it less needed or less powerful.
It is a wonderful resource to have because the author explains the call of each believer; our enemy that will try to thwart the call; and how we should wage the battle. In the beginning of the book, the author states:
My aim, however, is not to be exhaustive but helpful….. (page 8)
That is truly what he achieves.
He examines the importance of our call:
- Holiness: Sin breaks our fellowship with God. Holiness will take effort on our part.
- Self-Denial: We cannot live selfish lives and be pleasing to Him.
- New Life: A life where Christ dominates our thoughts, fills our lives, and give it meaning.
He examines our enemy because “knowing our enemy is fundamental to success in battle”, page 47. He covers:
- who is Satan
- how does Satan tempt us
- why does Satan tempt us
The book leaves us with a hope and a strategy…
The only way is if we believe that we will win because we know we can win, not because of our strength or our ingenuity or anything in us, but because of the One who lives in us and His strength. (page 72)
We must have a made up mind to pursue God and His ways. We must truly want to give up sin. This book is not so much a “how to” book as much as it is a plea, a call for each one of us to want to live lives pleasing to our God.
