On Fridays, I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is: Behind.
As humans, our minds are always curious. Or at least mine is. We ask questions, hoping to learn more, and gain insight.
We often look for the reason behind an action.
Upon seeing the word prompt, behind, I thought of two sisters. One sat at the feet of Jesus, listening and hanging on His every word. The other was distracted with the preparations and was busy bustling around, probably in the kitchen.
Seeing her sister, sitting and in her opinion, doing nothing, Martha asks the question that has been remembered for all of time: “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone?”
Jesus’ response was that Martha was bothered by many things, unimportant things. He states that Mary had chosen the good part.
Was it that Martha’s service was not needed or was unimportant? Was it that Mary sitting and hearing the words of Jesus was more important? Or perhaps, could it be the position of each of their hearts?
This morning the word prompt brings the reminder that God looks at our motives. He sees what is behind our every thought, word, and actions. Nothing is hidden from Him.
“All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, But the Lord weighs the motives.”
(Proverbs 16,2, NASB)
