Most Fridays, I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is: Recognize.
Recognize – the dictionary defines it as “to acknowledge or admit” (merriam-webster). But it is the synonyms which expand the meaning in adding the words understand, see, and know.
Several stories from Scripture come to mind.
In the book of Acts, we find Saul on the road to Damascus. He is about to have an encounter. But another man, Ananias, has an encounter of his own.
In a vision, the Lord tells him to go and have a conversation with Saul. Ananias responds, “Yes, Lord!”, for he recognized the voice of the Lord.
Mary Magdalene, upon standing outside the tomb where Jesus had been laid, sees two angels at the entrance. Although Jesus addresses her, “Mary!” The mere mention of her name and she immediately recognizes to Whom she is speaking.
Another meeting takes place as the disciples are walking with one another and discussing the events of the crucifixion which had taken place.
Jesus enters the conversation and begins to explain the Scriptures to them. They invite Him to stay with them, still unaware. When He broke the bread and blessed it, and began to give it out to them did something occur:
“Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him.”
(John 24:31, NASB)
One light.
One word.
One action.
May we, too, come to recognize God’s activity.
