Some Fridays, I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is: Longing.

Longing is defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as “a strong desire for something unattainable; a craving.”

Typing out these words brings to mind something written in my Bible:

“Jesus flees Satan’s temptation, not because He doesn’t like bread, but because He wants more bread than Satan can provide.”

(Pete Wilson, tweet from 3/10/12)

Jesus was fully aware there is nothing in life which will satisfy our wants, our cravings, or our longing. He knew the entire world belonged to one Person, His heavenly Father. It was God alone who could fill our every longing.

Now I am humming and pay attention to find:

“There’s within my heart a melody,
Jesus whispers sweet and low:
“Fear not, I am with thee; peace, be still,”
in all of life’s ebb and flow.

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus–
sweetest name I know,
fills my ev’ry longing,
keeps me singing as I go.”

We all have longings but
may our chief longing
be for Jesus.

I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead.” (Philippians 3:10, NLT)
