“Life loves to be taken by the lapel and told: I’m with you kid, let’s go!” (Maya Angelou)

Some days we all just need that little push. Someone to come alongside of us, whispering an encouraging word which infuses determination to keep on and finish the task.

Nehemiah, in learning the walls of Jerusalem were in disrepair, desired to go and build the walls back up again. It was a project which required the help, motivation, and perseverance of many workers.

As I read several lessons came to mind:

  • We must be fully committed. Let’s do it with wholehearted commitment. May we not allow ourselves to give way to discouragement. The people were able to get the work done because “the people had worked with enthusiasm.” (Nehemiah 4:6, NLT)
  • Continually pray. Pray before you start the project and while still in the throes of it all. When facing opposition, the people knew what to do … “But we prayed to our God…” (Nehemiah 4:9a, NLT)
  • Do what is needed. The people prayed, knowing to rely on God. And then in wisdom, they did what was necessary. They prayed … “and guarded the city day and night to protect ourselves.” (Nehemiah4:9b, NLT). Examine where gaps need to be closed and work together closely.
  • Work in unity. We must work towards the same purpose, supporting and encouraging one another. “…all the people assembled with a unified purpose.” (Nehemiah 8:1, NLT) When we come together, with one goal in mind, gathered as one mass and not individually, much will be accomplished.

In the face of much discouragement and taunting, the walls were completed.
And in record time too – fifty two days.
