Over the last few days, I have been looking at a familiar and often quoted verse. It has nagged at me in the best possible way. It’s a verse we go to when we are praying and waiting, especially if we are waiting longer than we would like.

I am in that praying and waiting mode at this time. Perhaps you are as well. So let me share:

But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength.
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31, NKJV)

In the midst of a trial, we discover our need for more than our own abilities. The most intelligent run out of know how. Those with the largest platforms do not have all the right contacts. Even the most energetic and overachieving run out of strength or energy.

So we hope. We hope in God knowing He replaces our lack with Himself. And we wait.

Waiting, in itself, is an action. It is the action of pausing or delaying any movement. We wait, or pause, for God’s timing with an expectation of His activity.

I always looked at the above verse as a promise which is fulfilled when the waiting is over and the answer received. But this morning, as I read the verse for the umpteenth time, my eyes were opened to the truth that this is a promise fulfilled IN the wait.

It is while we are still waiting, we discover …

  • wings as an eagle to soar over and through the circumstance
  • our weary legs become strong and run fast
  • the fainting person is able to walk for miles.

Perhaps the problem lies in this >> Waiting requires trust. Trust in God, not in ourselves.

Trust is never easy, but it is the key to unlocking God’s power. Trust enables people to walk the path that God has chosen for their lives (whether it be pleasant or unpleasant) without growing weary or wanting to quit. (The New American Commentary, Volume 15b, page 122)

May we find ourselves encouraged today,
knowing the promise is ours while
IN the wait.
