Courage is defined as “the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery” (dictionary.com).

We need courage in facing new situations, the unknown, and most often, in our most ordinary of days.

Being a woman who has often characterized herself as “a chicken”, the question is how do we grow in courage? How can we learn to be women who possess courage and bravely face each day?

Women of Courage: a Forty Day Devotional from the (in)Courage Community is an encouraging devotional which looks at forty different women from Scripture who exuded courage despite the difficulties they faced.

This devotional covers topics such as broken relationships, leadership, friendship, hope, hospitality, second chances and several more.

Forty devotionals covering the stories of forty different women, some of whom are well known and some lesser known. All delivering a message sure to infuse any woman’s soul with courage and the fortitude to press on.

Each reading begins with a passage of Scripture and a reading which further explains each woman’s plight. The reading includes application and a prayer designed to grow our relationship and dependency upon God, for He is the source of all courage.

Having read this book a few days before Thanksgiving, I was particularly struck by the story of Miriam in the section on Gratitude. Miriam, who just after crossing the Red Sea, chose to lead the Israelites in worship and gratitude while yet unsure of what lie ahead. She brought the lesson, and teaches us all:

“No matter what trials God has taken us through, we cannot deny His hand in our rescue. WE cannot ignore that regardless of our own efforts, we would still be fighting and running and panicking if He hadn’t come through with a supernatural solution. And when He does step in and intervene for us, our next step can only be praising Him!”
