It’s early Sunday morning as I sit watching the snow fall. Yes, it is snowing again and it is stunningly beautiful.

The morning is still a bit dark and gray, there is no wind, and the flakes are big. Like very big. They are falling softly, gently, straight down and probably will not result in much accumulation.

But in this moment, it speaks peace to my soul.

It is cloaking this day in its perfection and peace and beauty. All is well.

Oh sure, the weathermen can give us an explanation of the weather, but there is only One who can release it upon this earth. The snow is a beautiful reminder of God, who in this moment, is sharing the snow only He holds in His storehouse:

Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, Or have you seen the storehouses of the hail.” (Job 38:22, NASB)

The snow is falling gently, actually it is falling softly, quietly and not a sound can be heard. Maybe the softness, and the quiet, is the very sound of peace. His peace.

This world is currently hearing the rumbles of discontent and rumors of war. There are many disagreements needing to be resolved among countries, within countries, and amongst people.

But this gentle and soft snow continues to speak peace for only He can bring peace to this world and to our souls.

The words of the psalm, read earlier, are still open on my lap:

Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; For it is pleasant and praise is becoming.” (verse 1, NASB)

It’s good to praise God. It’s good for our souls and it’s becoming to our faces. Our resting faces become more pleasant, His joy will be displayed in our eyes and smiles.

“Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem! Praise your God, O Zion! For He has strengthened the bars of your gates; He has blessed your sons within you. He makes peace in your borders.” (verses 12-14, NASB)

As we praise, He strengthens us, the very gates of our hearts and minds. He brings peace within the borders of our bodies and souls.

He gives snow like wool.” (verse 16, NASB)

There is the connection to snow, to watching the snow yet falling outside my window.

  • He sends forth His command to the earth.” (verse 15)
  • He sends forth His word and melts them.” (verse 18)

His commands, His Word – He sends them forth. He sends them forth to do His will, to accomplish His purposes.

“So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11, NASB)

The snow –
a reminder this morning of the way His Word covers us,
enveloping our souls in His peace.
