I wake early, grab a mug of hot coffee and head to read as I so need to fill and nourish my soul.
Countless times, in the natural realm, I have asked family, “What would you like to eat?” Yet many times, I come to His Table not knowing for certain what it is I need. Such was the case this morning.
“One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers – Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew – throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for real people!” And they left their nets at once and followed him.” (Matthew 4:18-20, NLT)
I have already read these verses several times this morning and the words keep jumping off the page, filling me with exactly that which I needed at this very moment:
- Jesus sees us. Jesus saw two brothers. Their names are given to us. As Jesus walked along each day, He took note of those around Him. We do not go unnoticed by our Savior. Peter and Andrew were working, going about their normal, perhaps mundane day. And Jesus saw them. Jesus sees us in the midst of our everyday routines.
- Jesus calls to us. Peter and Andrew were busy and may not have even noticed Jesus watching them. Jesus calls to them. Did He call them by name? Did He shout to them? We don’t know but we know this … Jesus called out to them in the midst of while they were doing what they did each day – they fished for a living. And Jesus will call out to each of us in the midst of our everyday routines.
- Jesus want to show us how to live. These were experienced fishermen who knew all about how to go about doing what they knew to do. Yet Jesus says to them, “I will show you how….”. He wants to show us how to live with purpose and with passion so that our lives bear fruit for His glory. Jesus wants to show us how to live each day in the midst of our everyday routines.
I came to His Table this morning not knowing what I needed.
And He met me in the midst of my everyday routine.
Jesus saw.
Jesus called.
Jesus showed me.
“Come!”
Today I am joining with … Testimony Tuesday and Teaching What Is Good and Unite and Titus 2 Tues. and True Story .
Oh Joanne I love this thought so much: “I came to His Table this morning not knowing what I needed. And He met me in the midst of my everyday routine.” Isn’t it wonderful how we serve a great and mighty King who will meet us right where we are and bless us beyond measure? I love this picture you painted of how God meets you right there in His Word. Those are some of my most favorite moments. Thanks for sharing such a precious gift with us! 🙂
Nicki, it is amazing how we don’t even know what we need at times & He serves up exactly what we need. May we always come to His Table to find nourishment for our souls.
I used to think this part all the time in my life…
“knew all about how to go about doing what they knew to do”.
In fact that’s part of what motivated me to change and pay more attention to what God wanted me to do. I thought maybe that part of human nature would leave when I was living more in ministry than anything else.
But the fact is, it can seep back in. Everything can come to a point where it’s just what we do. Sometimes it happens to me in ministry.
I pray I never forget this. I don’t want it to continue happening. Thank you for the reminder Joanne.
Heather, I never want to forget either! May we always be open to see what He wants to show us. And may we always hear His call, “Come, follow me!” So grateful our paths have crossed as you are such a blessing!
As are you! 🙂
So very grateful that He knows what I need every moment. Good post.
Me too! He never gives us stale nourishment!
I love how He meets us in those every day moments. This reminds me also to slow down to see others . . . to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Much love to you, friend.xoxo
Beth, it is so true. That is my hope as well – – may they see Him in us. I so appreciate when you stop & share. Much love to you this morning!
The way He makes something we’ve read over and over new and fresh never ceases to amaze me!
Me too, Elizabeth! And I never want to take that for granted. May His Word fall fresh each time! Blessings to you!!!
I have to admit that life has gotten so crazy that my time alone with Him has suffered. So not good!! Thanks for the reminder that He meets me where I am and all I need to do is show up and listen.
Holly, prayed for you after reading your comment. May God provide you some quiet time with Him. Praying that He shows up in the midst of this busy time & speaks deeply into your heart. May His peace reign over your day!
Oh, that is so me! I get tired of asking family members what they want to eat–but I love your reminder that God doesn’t have to ask–he knows just what we need and he ‘feeds’ us time after time.
Anita, may I (we) always remember to come to His Table as He so meets our needs right there. Every. Single. Time. Tears rolling as He did it again for me this morning. Totally amazes me how He just shows us even before I get there & has prepared exactly what I need to meet my need today. Blessings!
I am reminded of the old hymn, “Come and Dine the Master calleth, come and Dine; you may feast at Jesus’ table all the time, He who fed the multitude, turned the water into wine, calleth now, come and dine.” Thank you for sharing your interesting post with us here at “Tell Me a Story.”
Hazel, although its been a few days since I first read your comment, you managed to get that song stuck in my head for days 🙂 I remembered the lines which said …”With His manna He doth feed, and supplies our every need” and “there they found their heart’s desire, read and fish upon the fire; thus He satisfies the hungry every time.” Amazing how these words come back after all this time & still remain true!
