Itā€™s Friday!!! Iā€™m joining Kate Motaung for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt. Five minutes. No editing. Many of us writing on that same word.

Todayā€™s prompt is ā€¦ Grow.

I read the word prompt in my Twitter feed this morning and conversations with three-year-old Jocelyn flood back to mind. I pick her up twice a week from pre-school and the car ride home is always interesting.

For the last two weeks, the conversation has pretty much been on repeat, “Mimi, look at this. Everything is growing.”

“Yes, Jocelyn, isn’t it beautiful?”

“No, it not beautiful. Everything is green. I don’t like green.”

I try for a few minutes to convince her of the beauty of “green” but she usually decides to look up through the sunroof and states, “I look at the sky. Blue is my favorite color!”

She’s a stubborn little one and my heart loves her fiercely.

Yesterday, however, was slightly different.

“Mimi, look, everything is growing!”

“Yes, Jocelyn, isn’t it beautiful?”

Her response this time was slightly different as she asked, “Why it growing? Why it green everywhere? The grass is green, the leaves are green, the bush “over dere” is green. Green all over.”

This time her little voice did not sound like she was going to take the conversation to the same dead end. There was the sound of a heart open and so I entered …

“Yes, it is green all over. This is because God is making everything grow beautiful.”

Silence in the back seat. And she is not looking up out of the sunroof but out and about her window. So I continued,

“And God is making you grow bigger too. Look how you are learning so many new things!”

This time she responded by letting me know all about her super hero legs which run fast, how she was taller now. She let me know she was no longer “small” but a big girl who goes to school.

The beauty of spring is no matter how many times we experience springtime, it brings the wonderful reminder:

“God wants us to grow up, to know the whole truth and to tell it in love – like Christ in everything. We take our lead from Christ, who is the source of everything we do. He keeps us in step with each other. His very breath and blood flow through us, nourishing us so that we will grow up healthy in God, robust in love.” (Ephesians 4:15-16, The Message)

It was quiet in the back seat for but a few minutes, until Jocelyn saidƂĀ  …

“I think green is God’s favorite color.
He grows a lot of green.”

Yes, Jocelyn, He does. And I am grateful He causes each of us to grow as well!
