The Five Minute Friday prompt this week is … Breathe. You can click at the bottom of this post to get to Kate Motaung’s site and read all that has been shared on this word.

Staring at the word and definitions only one jumped out at me – “to live; exist”.

Breathe – the inhaling and exhaling of air we all need to remain alive. Without breathing, we would cease to exist.

God formed man and we are told:

“He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils and the man became a living person.” (Genesis 2:7, NLT)

Only the man He had formed did God breathe into. Animals, while living, breathed apart from His breath. God performed the CPR on Adam and Adam had life. God breathed into man causing man to have an eternal soul and life. It is His breath which distinguishes us from all other living beings.

This all hits me, as I read the word prompt and definition, only because of the Scripture I read just yesterday afternoon while sitting in my car waiting …

“Then he [Jesus] breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” (John 20:22, NLT)

Jesus, empowered His disciples with the Holy Spirit to go forth and do as they were being commissioned. We too, as believers in Christ, have the Holy Spirit residing in us. He gives us life, empowering us to do that which He has called us to do. He invades our life with His strength, knowledge, and wisdom we would not have possessed otherwise to accomplish His will.

“For in him we live and move and exist.” (Acts 17:28, NLT)

God breathed on man.
Grateful this morning that He breathed on me and gave me life.
