“And he also said, “It is finished! I am the Alpha and the Omega – the Beginning and the End I will give freely from the springs of the water of life.” (Revelation 21:6, NLT)

“It is finished.” At long last God’s amazing purpose has been realized. How has this happened? Why does Scripture so confidently affirm it?

(from Tables in the Wilderness by Watchman Nee, 3/8)

Interesting questions raised by Watchman Nee. This is God speaking to John, giving him revelation and the words to be recorded in what we now know to be in the Book of Revelation.

God echoes the words of Jesus on the Cross, “It is finished.” Only He could say these words with confidence. He is the Alpha and the Omega. The first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. God alone connects the first and the last and all that is in between as He alone encompasses all of time and total truth. He is Beginning and the End. He always has been, was there when time as we know it began, and He will be the one to bring time to an end.

These words should fill us with a confidence as well:

  • God finishes all that He begins. “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns” (Philippians 1;6, NLT). We need to remind ourselves of this when life raises questions within us.
  • God is working it all out. Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan” (Ephesians 1:6. NLT). No matter what we see, or how it may appear, we hold onto the truth God holds the plan and is working it out in our lives.
  • God knows the end. “You have decided the length of our lives. You know how many months we will live, and we are not given a minute longer” (Job 14:5, NLT). As long as we are drawing breath, He yet has a work for us to do.

Watchman Nee concludes in the same devotional:

“This assures us that nothing He has begun to do in our lives will be left unfinished. God cannot be withstood by man’s incompetence or by Satan’s enmity. Sin is too much for us, but it is not too much for Him. His Name, which is His own nature, is our guarantee that He will see His work in us through to its perfect completion.”

God works out His plan as He works in us.
His Name and nature is our guarantee.

“For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.” (Philippians 2:13, NLT)
