Friday meant she was a week overdue and another ultrasound was scheduled. It was a privilege and honor to be asked to drive her as it would mean another peek inside to see what was going on.

Months before, I had been given a peek, the images then were quite clear so I am not certain what I was expecting to see and hear differently.

The same lovely technician was present. As she spread the gel over the now fully rounded belly, she explained what she would be looking for.

“The baby is clearly well formed, her stomach a good size, her lungs doing their practice breathing very well, heart beat is strong, placenta is high, and the baby is clearly in the birth canal ready to arrive soon.”

All of this is heard and absorbed in my mind. My amazement of it all is great. But not as great as one image which will forever stand out in my memory …

Her profile.

Her profile months ago was just precious. Still is. But here is what struck me deeply …

Her profile is exactly the same.
It is no different.

Sure she is bigger but the shape of her nose – the same. Her lips – the same. Her forehead – the same.

And she still has her little fist up close to her mouth.

It was then, in that very moment, the truth of Psalm 139 struck me deeply to my core:

“Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous – how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb” (verses 14-15, NLT).

God alone has been knitting this baby, perfectly forming her, and knowing exactly how she should look – from Day 1. While she grew in size and developed so her little body would function outside the womb, the details of her appearance were already set in place. Her eyes and each strand of her hair have been already selected by a God who has ordained their color and texture.

She looks just as she should since the very beginning of her life.

By all the calculations, this little one is “late”. But by the plan of God, she will be right on time. He has been involved in her life even before we knew it. While none of us has had any impact on her life just yet, His hand has intimately been impacting her every day thus far.

“You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed” (verse 16, NLT).

Every day – already planned.
And so, this day of your arrival?
Right on time.
His!
