Each Friday my writing stems from a word prompt. Five minutes, one word prompt. The prompt this week is … Burden.

Dictionary.com defines ‘burden’ as “that which is carried; load; that which is borne with difficulty”.

It’s the last definition which grabbed my attention as it asked the question, “When did life become difficult?”

The burdens we carry are ours and weigh upon us differently. At times, it can be a single burden, and other times, burden upon burden.

No matter the size, type, or weight of a burden – we think we must take care of them ourselves, resolving them in our own strength. Yet Scripture calls us to do otherwise:

“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” (1 Peter 5:7, NLT)

We can give our worries ”“ our burdens ”“ to God with the assurance we do so because He cares for us. He is not indifferent to our angst. God is moved with compassion towards us.

We can give our worries ”“ our burdens ”“ to God with the assurance He is mighty and able to help us in our times of distress.

As we give all our burdens to the Lord, they begin to shrivel,
becoming lighter as they are eclipsed
by His compassion and power to sustain us through all things.
