It’s known as “the psalm of protection” and is oft times quoted. But on a recent morning, it was just one verse which stood out:

“He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.” (Psalm 91:4, NLT)

The imagery is one of an eagle who spreads her wings to keep her eaglets safe. In this one verse, I am reminded of God’s actions:

  1. God is our protection. We can trust in God’s protection. He will cover us. He will shelter us.
  2. It is God’s power which will keep us. He is the one doing all the action. We need not do anything but stay put with Him.
  3. His promises are faithful and sure. God will bring peace and joy as we remain with Him.

Tucked in the folds of the pages of my Bible was a poem I read years ago:

“A sovereign Protector I have.
Unseen, yet forever at hand.
Unchangeably faithful to save,
Almighty to rule and command.”

(Augustus M. Toplady)

This is our God – sovereign, unseen, unchangeable.

The Almighty One.
Our Protector.
