Each Friday my writing stems from a word prompt. Five minutes, one word prompt. The prompt this week is … World.
The word prompt immediately brings back the commentary in my Bible which had been recently read:
“Second Thessalonians is primarily a pastoral letter from Paul that provides hope and confidence in God when the world has gone mad. Christ reigns now, and Christ will be triumphant in the end.â€
Listening to the news each day makes me realize how this world is spinning out of control. Just yesterday, I found myself wondering aloud to a family member, “How did we ever get to this point?”
Instead of an answer to my question, the answer comes in the form of One Person:
“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33, NLT)
In the world, there will be sorrow and discord. In Jesus, there is peace. Again my Bible commentary offers this beautiful hope:
“This is the position we need to claim; we are in Christ, and therefore we can overcome the world and all of its hatred.”
(from the Warren Wiersbe Study Bible, page 1581)
In Christ.
We can overcome the world.
Today I am joining … Five Minute Friday and Faith On Fire and Fresh Market Friday and Faith ‘N Friends .
Good morning, Joanne. Thank you for bringing us back to hope. Mh husband is a police officer, and every day I see posts where another was shot down in the line of duty. Yes, how did we get here? I am thankful to the One who saves, who will return to change this world forever. In Christ, Julie from #fmf
I am so grateful that He has overcome this world. We can pray. We can stand for Christ. We can reflect Christ. He is the One Who has overcome it while in the midst of it. We are to stand with Him. I am thankful I am His.
Looks like great minds think alike today! Our FMF posts ended up very similar in theme and even used the same Bible verse. I love that quote from 2 Thessalonians commentary.
We can overcome the world because we are in Him. Such an amazing truth that we too often forget!
Oh my – so often it does seem like a world gone mad! Apparently, that has been a similar thought throughout the ages!! And Christ is still the answer…and still will be in the ages to come!
How we got here I don’t now,
except God said that we would,
and we must resist this heathen-show,
and hew unto the good.
They’re sending blokes to sheilas’ dunnies,
and offering them abortions.
It’s a page from hell’s Sunday Funnies,
but these are now our bloody portions.
We need to save the souls we can
by offering them The Christ,
showing them the better plan
for which He was sacrificed.
And we must never be too shy to say,
“I am a Christian, and I’ll die that way.”
The reference to blokes being offered abortions comes from the second Democratic presidential debate of June 27, in which Julian Castro made the point that biological men who identify as women should have access to ‘reproductive justice’, which he had previously defined as unrestricted abortion.
Wish I was kidding, but I’m not.
Beautiful response to your prompt, Joanne. It reminds me of one of my favorite verses -” not as the world gives do I give to you”. We must trust in the hope given to us through Christ in these crazy times.
