Each Friday my writing stems from a word prompt. Five minutes, one word prompt. The prompt this week is … Five.

Five is such a small number. We can count to five on one hand as it will not take much to get there.

Five brings to mind the story of Jesus sitting on a hill with His disciples. Soon a huge crowd came looking for Him and He took the opportunity to teach.

Jesus recognized their soul hunger but also saw their natural hunger which set in after sitting with him much of the day. He asks of Philip, “Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?”

It was no small crowd as Scripture gives a head count of about five thousand, and that being a count of men only. With women and children, the number would be much higher.

Another disciple speaks up and tells of a young boy who has his lunch which consists of five barley loaves and two fish. He asks simply, “But what good would that do for a crowd this large?”

And he would be correct in his estimation when appraising the situation logically.

But Jesus is anything but logical. He knows His Father is able to do all things, even the impossible – like stretch a meal for one to feed the many.

Jesus simply takes the loaves, gives thanks to God, and begins to break it up and has it distributed among the people.

Funny thing happened that day …

The people not only ate, they ate till they were full. There not only was enough, there were leftovers.

Five.
Such a small number.
Our little becomes much in the hands of Jesus.
