Yesterday was a morning of high winds and downpours, bringing new challenges to these covid days for many – power outages. Power outages mean no way to access remote learning or for school buildings to operate with lights, AC, or computers.

The days are challenging and often feel like one thing after another. Wave after wave pounding on our souls which already are stressed and fragile.

Returning to my daily reading schedule brings the story of Paul and Silas imprisoned. Not only in prison but heavily shackled after being severely beaten so as not to be able to escape. While sitting in the dark praying and singing hymns to God, we are told something occurs:

“Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shake to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off!”
(Acts 16:26, NLT)

The story is so familiar, having been heard from the early days of Sunday School and flannel graphs, and yet the words jumped off the page, bringing one thought …

Even when we are shaken to the core,
God will meet us and bring release (freedom).

These days are troublesome to me – no matter where I look there is unrest – politically, spiritually, environmentally, educationally, and medically. Left to my own thoughts, I could easily become shaken to my core; and truth be known, there have been days (or nights), when I have been.

And then I remember these words:

Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.” (Psalm 55:22, NIV)

As we give everything which concerns us to the Lord in prayer, talking to Him about them each day, He will keep us from being shaken. The burdens which seek to keep us bound and imprisoned will be released into the hands of the One who cares deeply for each one of us.
