The change of seasons is my favorite part of living in New England. Do I have a favorite season? No, not really, as I would not want to give up any one of them.

It’s autumn ”“ the seasons are changing once again. It continually amazes me to see the sunrise in a different spot over the tops of the trees out back of our house. The shadows lengthening in the grass. The smell of autumn as leaves dry and get ready to fall from their appointed branches. The amazing display of color ”“ varied in their hues and brilliance.

One cannot even describe the comfort of the smell of the heat coming up for the very first time each fall.

Each sight, smell, and thought a reminder of the creativity and care of our God towards His people. Faithfully. Tenderly.

While all else around us changes, He stays the same.

And maybe that is the very words He whispers over us as we shift from season to season.

  • “I am the Lord, and I do not change.” (Malachi 3:6, NLT)
  • “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8, NLT)
  • “He [God our Father] never changes or casts a shifting shadow.” (James 1:17b, NLT)

Our God and Savior always remains the same. His message of Good News constant. Earthly leaders may come and go, but our God remains the same. We can be certain of His unchanging nature. We can trust His help, His grace, His mercy, His power, and His guidance always to be there for us.

This morning I am remembering back a few years ago, playing outside with my second granddaughter. We collected signs of autumn in a basket. The basket soon filled with varied leaves, berries, dried flowers, and a mushroom. Jocelyn was both proud and excited by her findings and happily exclaimed, “This is the best day ever!”

I laughed and asked her about other best days. She mulled it over and replied, “But this is the best day ever!”

It is then the words of a quote read come back to mind …

Write it on your heart that every day is the best day of the year.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson~

“This is the day the Lord has made.
We will rejoice and be glad in it.”

(Psalm 118: 24, NLT)
