Every Friday I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is … Fresh.
The word “fresh” suggests to me something new, not experienced before, or perhaps not known.
As the year came to a close, I needed a fresh word. Perhaps I should say, I wanted a fresh Word. Sometimes familiarity can rob me, as I allow my eyes to browse over the better known Scriptures.
This year I opened a new Bible, a new version, the words written at times in an unfamiliar manner. And this has been a good thing thus far for it falls on my heart and mind afresh – not experienced before, perhaps not even known.
The Israelites had to go gather their manna every morning. They could only gather what they needed for the day as any extra would go bad. It wouldn’t keep for the next day.
Jesus – the Living Word – the Logos and we are told:
“In the beginning was the Word , and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1, NASB)
Jesus – the fresh Word – for this time, for today.
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4, NASB)
Each day may we gather from His Word exactly what we need,
for His Word will always be sufficient for the day.
It will fall new as if never before experienced. His Word is always fresh.

Scripture viewed through the lens of daily circumstances sheds new light.
I like your reminder of the Israelites getting just enough manna each day. I sometimes look at the far future and get worried about things. I need to remember that in God’s Word and through His Spirit I will get what I need for TODAY. May this day be blessed and fresh for you.

It’s true that sometimes I get so comfortable with the Word that I forget that it is living. It’s new every morning if I look at it that way. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
It is amazing how at times we can skim over His Word and miss what He has for us. May He give us eyes to see His Word through a fresh lens each time we open the pages.

Manna came down every morning,
delicious food for the new day,
but as next night turned to morning
it sure didn’t stay that way,
for that which Lord God had ordered
for the wanderers in wilderness
was something not intended hoarded,
but cherished in the preciousness
of knowledge that He would provide
for the people He had chosen,
and sustenance daily betide
because His heart could not be frozen
with fickly haughty Olympian sneer
against the folk He held so dear.

Joanne, I love your ideas on the word “fresh” related to scripture! The thought of beginning the year with a new Bible in a new version is a great idea, that would certainly keep me more focused. Thank you for this fresh perspective!
I don’t start a new Bible every year but this year felt led to do so.

Yes and yes and yes! I’ve been a Christian for almost 50 years now and yet Jesus is new every morning. New love, new hope, new faith, new mercy. Beautiful post!

I so agree, Susan. It is amazing how He brings something new every day – a new appreciation and deep gratitude for Him as well!
He is always there to meet our every need. Sure, sometimes He surprises us with things we want. But meeting the day to day needs is the true miracle.
