Every Friday I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is … Lift.

Lift is defined as “to move or support to a higher position.

Jesus in talking with Nicodemus says:

“As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up.” (John 3:14, NASB)

The people grumbled against Moses and God when the wilderness became more challenging than expected. God sent fiery snakes among the people, which of course bit them. The people came to Moses to intercede to God on their behalf; and God told him to make a bronze serpent. Once lifted up on a pole, the people would look upon it and live.

Jesus reminded Nicodemus of that occurrence and shared with him that He one day would be lifted up as well.

This morning the word prompts reminds me of our constant need to lift our eyes in order to see our help, our relief, when days are challenging and difficult.

Instead of keeping our eyes downcast, we look up –

“I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; From where shall my help come? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1-2, NASB)

Our faithful Lord is our constant help; and when we cannot lift our own eyes, He swoops down to help us do so –

“But You, O Lord, are a shield about me, My glory, and the One who lifts my head.” (Psalm 3:3, NASB)

He was lifted up,
so that as we lift our eyes,
we find our help in Him.
