“Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” “ (Matthew 14:29-30, NASB)
“You will not prevail by measuring the waves or grow strong by gauging the wind …
“Lift up [your] eyes to the hills” (Psalm 121:3) and go forward. There is no other way.
Do you fear to launch away?
Faith lets go to swim!
Never will He let you go;
It’s by trusting you will know
Fellowship with Him.”(from Streams in the Desert by L. B. Cowman, June 23, page 245)

I want to leave the measuring in his hands! How wonderful that he receives the brunt of the waves with us.
Always a nice reminder, and is nice that when we do start to fall, as with Peter, we can call out to God.
Such wisdom in this post. Thank you for sharing!
Joanne … it’s way too easy to measure the waves, to be peering around us looking for something or someone to make us feel safe and certain.
I want to keep my ‘eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of my faith.’ One day at a time …
Hmm…I may have been measuring the waves this weekend. I need to stop. Thanks for this encouragement, Joanne!
It’s almost always tempting to measure the waves, because they seem so large! But my God is bigger! Good reminder!
What a good thought–we think we have to size up a situation, like the spies sent to Canaan. But that can backfire, as it did with them. We don’t need to “measure the waves.” We just need to trust God.
