Every Friday I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is … Laugh.
The word prompt immediately brought the verse to mind:
“A joyful heart is good medicine, But a broken spirit dries up the bones.”
(Proverbs 17:22, NASB)
My grandchildren can make me laugh just watching them laugh. Children have an amazing way of finding humor in anything. Even the jokes and riddles they think up make no sense and yet they crack themselves up.
I remember once reading children (toddlers) laugh an average of 300 times a day. Adults? About 17 times. Big difference.
As I sat thinking about why, and thinking about my own grandchildren, one reason came to mind –
Children have less worries. They do not concern themselves with world events, paying bills, buying food, or success. They simply wake up and enjoy the day. They laugh 300X a day.
Jesus tells us not to worry about food or clothing. He wisely points out that we cannot add a single hour to our lives by worrying. He ends His discourse on worry with this reminder:
“So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34, NASB)
Let’s be like children –
Worry less and
laugh more, maybe even 300X!

Today I may be joining …
I have a granddaughter, and I see so much truth in your words, Joanne! We silly laugh, and, you’re right, it doesn’t make sense, and it doesn’t matter. As God’s children, we have the same provision for our day as children, but the world wants us to think otherwise. Thank you for reminding me today of His love and provision! Your FMF neighbor, Tina
Yes, my grandchildren make me laugh too. Just a couple of days ago our granddaughter was telling one-line jokes at lunch. My son and I were just laughing and that made her laugh too.
“Let the children come to Me
with laughter as their leaven,
for that is how it’s gonna be
when you get to Heaven.
You sober sided serious types
will have a rude awakening,
raising eyebrows, saying, ‘Yipes!
Christ’s sides are really shaking
with a mirth that’s unrestrained
(is this fitting for a King?).
What is this that’s been ordained?’
Well, baby, feel Me, here’s the thing,
if your joy cannot knock down a wall,
you need not be there at all.”
That statistic is actually scary! Thanks for the challenge to be like children in yet another thing! Seems like growing up is overrated.
I think laughter and a sense of humor helps to keep us young! Visiting from FMF#16
It really is wonderful that children can so freely laugh and find joy in simple things. This week I have been helping out my daughter and picking up her son from school. Each afternoon as I wait out front of the school with the other parents and grandparents I have been noticing a sweet group of pre-school children waiting with their moms. They have been running back and forth across the lawn giggling and chasing each other with such joyful abandon it makes me smile. I think you are right. They freely laugh because they are well taken care of and don’t have the worries of the world upon their shoulders. I think I need to take a lesson from them and have that same attitude of joy, for don’t we have a Good Father who takes care of all our needs? Why worry when we are safe in His loving hands…I’d rather laugh. 🙂
Laughter is good medicine for the body, heart and soul. I love to laugh and love to laugh at the silly things I do. 🙂
I Love to laugh, I’m so easily amused. This is such a sweet post.
Visiting today from G&T
As my husband Wayne mentioned above, we have a granddaughter who enjoys telling “dad jokes”. We’re looking forward to hearing more of those corny jokes around our Thanksgiving table tomorrow. I love your post — so sweet and such a good reminder.
Have a blessed Thanksgiving!
