Every Friday I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is … Like.
“Like” – to be the same as, to have the same character.
This is the definition which first came to mind; and the first question to come to mind was: What am I to be like?
Be like a child …
“And He called a child to Himself and set him among them, and said, “Truly I say to you, unless you change and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. So whoever will humble himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:2-4, NASB)
Quiet myself like a child …
“I have certainly soothed and quieted my soul; Like a weaned child resting against his mother, My soul within me is like a weaned child.” (Psalm 131:2, NASB)
Speak words like honey …
“Kind words are like honey ”“Â sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.”
(Proverbs 16:24, NLT)
Love like Jesus …
“We loved you so much that we shared with you not only God’s Good News but our own lives as well.” (1 Thessalonians 2:8, NLT)
Pray like Jesus:
“Pray, then, in this way: ”˜Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. ”˜Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. ”˜Give us this day our daily bread. ”˜And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. ”˜And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’ ” (Matthew 6:8-13, NASB)
Be like God …
“The true expression of Christian character is not in good-doing, but in God-likeness. If the Spirit of God has transformed you within, you will exhibit divine characteristics in your life, not just human characteristics. God’s life in us expresses itself as God’s life, not as human life trying to be godly.” (Oswald Chambers)

Today I may be joining …
and I LIKE this post, Joanne!
Be not unlike a little child,
strive to be like Christ the Lord,
let you heart go running wild
past that which you can afford
to give more from the depths of lack,
to pray when prayers do not avail,
to take the blow, not hitting back,
to throw away the balance-scale
that measures every tit-for-tat
that you may vengeance every wrong,
for that is just not where it’s at
if you want to sing the song
(which the homies might find odd)
that makes you bit more like God.
Andrew, almost every week I think the same thing … “This one is Andrew’s best!” But this week … is definitely one of my very favorites! Thank you for blessing me each and every week!
Beautiful thoughts and scripture!
Much appreciated!
I love this list. Great reminder to keep growing in faith and discipline.
Love this post Joanne!
Bless you, Jennifer
Powerful words Ms. Joanne. So often, I wonder if I will ever make it to “being like Christ”. I often think of how short I fall of His wondrous glory, but then I remind myself that the journey is not one of ascension, but one of preparing myself to be worthy of His gift. I remind myself in those moments that my goal is not to become God but to become a reflection of Him in the way I live my life. As a human, I can never fully attain that goal, but the glory is in the journey, isn’t it?
J.D., your transparency always humbles and blesses me. Our only goal is to reflect our Lord in our lives. He knew we would not be able to do so on our own, so He came to indwell us so that His life would be seen in us. It is a most amazing journey for sure and how very grateful I am we get to share our journeys along the way!
nicely pulled together. FMF16
