Every Friday I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is … Follow.
The world will tell us to “follow our hearts”, meaning to chase our dreams or pursue your passions. We need to question if this is correct or truth. There’s a problem with this logic and it lies within ourselves:
“The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; Who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9, NASB)
Our own heart lies to us, trick us, and leads us astray. We foolishly return to depending on our hearts so the problem happens – repeatedly. We need to become stronger, wiser, more discerning and bolder so we stop the cycle of chasing empty promises.
Christ called his disciples, and calls us today, to follow Him. Each of His disciples were already following their passions – they were fishermen, doctors, and tax collectors. Christ called them to stop following their own dreams, or ideas of success, and follow Him. He gave them a new path to follow. A different way of living.
We need to move to “move to the beat of a different drummer.” We need to be moving to the beat of the Only drummer who is able to make a difference. This requires following His heart and His alone.
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27, NASB)
May we follow His heart,
and His heart alone.

Today I may be joining …
Yes, very dangerous to follow our hearts. Much better to follow Jesus!
They tell you, hark to your own dreams,
in them you will find the truth,
but this is just not what it seems,
and dude, I am the living proof.
I followed that bright light of me
down the pathways of the years,
and all it ever came to be
was a wave of salty tears
when at last I really knew
all I had wilfully missed,
and the conclusion that I drew
was that it’s vital to resist
that self-portrait of your fate
before it’s all gone far too late.
Andrew, the last three lines … so powerful to think on. You continue to amaze me in the way God is using you and Barb now. May we resist and follow Him alone. Blessings!
Good point, Joanne, it’s not about “moving to the beat of a different drummer, but the need to move to the beat of the Only drummer.”
May we faithfully follow the One for all of four days.
I love this… “We need to be moving to the beat of the Only drummer who is able to make a difference.” Very insightful. Visiting from FMF #8
Following our hearts is very risky and often foolish! So much better to follow Jesus! Visiting from FMF#11
Taking the time to pause when our hearts try to take the lead always proves to be wise.
Amen to this, Joanne! Too many times my heart directs me to live in contradiction to my faith. It is an unprincipled guide. Far better to trust Him.
Blessings,
Tammy
Amen & amen!
Bless you sweet friend, Jennifer
Not only is the heart deceitful, it’s dreadfully inconsistent! Quite an undependable leader to try to follow. At one point it desires love and acceptance, at another wealth and security, and still another ease and comfort. Jesus is the same yesterday and today and forever–a much more stable shepherd to follow!
Joanne, there is much wisdom in your words. I recall a few years back, a friend of mine was telling me that he was going to follow his heart regarding a situation. Then there’s me saying,” that’s not in the Bible” Then I said how wretched our hearts can be. This>>”We need to be moving to the beat of the Only drummer who is able to make a difference. This requires following His heart and His alone.” Amen, Hallelujah!

Wise words, Joanne.
