Every Friday I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is … Left.
Seeing the word prompt, both my One Word 2023 comes to mind and a Scripture:
“Your ears will hear a word behind you, “This is the way, walk in it,” whenever you turn to the right or to the left.” (Isaiah 30:21, NASB)
It wasn’t one of the verses selected months ago as a companion to my one word, “Guide”, but it was the verse which came to mind this morning.
Instead of writing, I opened my Advent devotional to the first reading. There Max Lucado’s words remind me of the One who pens each of our stories. The Author began each story before the beginning of time, before anything that is, even was.
“The Author starts each love story, but each life will write his or her own ending.”
(from In the Manger, by Max Lucado, page 3)
We all have crossroads in our lives. We have choices to make, and even though the choices are ours, God is still with us. He is guiding us every step of the way.
Even here, at the start of Advent, in the stillness and dark of the morning, He brings the reminder gently …
He is with us.
Immanuel – God with us.
He has not left us on our own.

Today I may be joining …
Most crossroads come upon us
in the darkness we create,
and it is unseeing, thus,
we stroll to meet the fate
that seems so very far away
(there’s time, and things might change!),
but unexpected comes the day
that our choices now derange
the glory that might have been ours,
the song whose end we didn’t write;
instead we’re bound to looming towers
of our chosen pagan night
from which we had the chance to flee
had we just flicked a Bic, to see.
May we seek His guidance so our choices align with His will and purposes.
He is Faithful and True, and is always guiding us, Joanne. What an amazing WOTY!
It is amazing how one word can continue to speak throughout the seasons and year. It’s probably what draws me to seek a word each year, for the journey is always a precious one.
‘In the stillness and dark of the morning’, yes, it can be difficult to get up on these dark winter evenings when there are difficult tasks ahead. Thank you for the reminder that we can make our choices with His strength to help us.
Letitia, we can not only make our choices, but with His guidance, they will be the right and best choices. Praying our choices will always honor Him. Blessings!
I wish I had an advent devotional. I love the devotional I have by Max Lucado, but it is not an advent devotional. I enjoyed reading your blog and I am striving to walk the right path.
Loved “The Author starts each love story, but each life will write his or her own ending.” It really made me stop and ponder.
So beautifully said, Joanne! God has not left us alone – He is with us! Visiting from FMF#4
Nicely written. FMF12
I love that quote from Max Lucado – “The Author starts each love story, but each life will write his or her own ending.” Thank you, Joanned
