“I just cannot take another thing happening. Too much going on at once.”

Those were the words I heard from the other end of the phone. There are surely days we all have felt the very same way.

We stuff our emotions down until the tears behind our eyes are like a geyser, and in one quick moment,  they erupt.

Usually the one thing which sets the geyser of emotions off isn’t even the big thing. It just happened to be the one thing which found no room to settle into our day.

The recent phone conversation has me asking this question: Exactly how do we get to the point of eruption?

In spending time pondering the question, it became clear that when things pile up, one on top of another, the layers becoming deeper and deeper, the geyser feeling inside begins to bubble.

It’s all those little distractions that take our focus off of the one main task on which we are to be concentrating. The dictionary informs me that a distraction is “an object that directs one’s attention away from something else; creating mental confusion” (from merriam-webster.com).

It’s when our focus is shifted from the main task that mental confusion can begin to set in and grow in our hearts and minds.

Most distractions aren’t even worth the time nor the attention we give to them. Listen to what Isaiah tells us:

“Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, “This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left.”  (Isaiah 30:21, NLT)

Isaiah assures me of three things:

  1. God will instruct His people. He tell us what we need to focus on, and we will know it is Him.
  2. God will no longer be distant. He will be right behind us.
  3. He will actively be guiding. He gives clear directions, each day, to guide us throughout our lives.

God brings an orderliness to our lives, not confusion. Calm not strife. He helps us to think clearly, attentively, and with purpose.

Won’t you join me at Woman to Woman Ministries HERE and let’s talk about distractions and how we can maintain our focus.
