“The devil has made it his business to monopolize on three elements: noise, hurry, crowds. He will not allow quietness.” (Elisabeth Elliot)

Those three elements can so easily and quickly become idols in our lives.

Idols will have us believe that they can bring answers, satisfy our needs, and do what only God can do in our lives.

The story of Mary and Martha, found in Luke 10:38-42, is a familiar one to us all. One woman chooses to sit while the other chooses to serve. Recently it fell a little differently.

Mary was sitting at the Lord’s feet but, she was not idle. Big difference. She was listening to His word (verse 39).

Martha was serving, she also was not idle. But she was distracted (verse 40).

Both women chose good things. One chose to sit quietly and listen. The other chose to serve.

We need to know when we are to stop our doing. We need to still ourselves. But we do so in order to listen for God, for His Word to speak to us.

We are to serve God and others, but it must not distract us from listening to God, to hearing His Word.

It can be called “the trap of busyness” (from More Than Anything, by The Daily Grace Co., page 19)

And it is a trap when it keeps us from listening to God, from hearing His Word.

We can fill our calendars with activities, appointments, and responsibilities to the point that we fall into bed exhausted at the end of the day. And each of those things may be good things.

My mind turns to even serving in our churches. We must not do so with neglecting being in church, worshiping God, and hearing His Word. There needs to be a balance, a rotation so that we are not distracted from God working in our lives.

“May we redirect our worship from busy days to the One who rules our days.”

How do you balance your time each day?
