I love the summer as I get the opportunity to do a few things that I do not get to over the school year:

  • sort through old clothes
  • organize the kitchen
  • thorough, deep cleaning of the house
  • de-clutter the attic
  • go through the medicine cabinet

Last week I tackled the medicine cabinet. And the winner of the oldest expiration date was…..{insert long, loud drum roll here for full effect!}……the cough medicine with the year 2005 on it!!! Yes, you read that correctly – 2005. Just a little past due 🙂

Here’s the thing that has me puzzled….I know that I have cleaned out the cabinet since 2005. Seriously. So my question is, “How did it sneak back in to the cabinet?”

That one expired little box of medicine has made me think about SIN a bit:

  1. There is no such thing as a secret sin. Seriously. We are told in Numbers 32:23, “….and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.” Unconfessed sin will surface, one way or another.
  2. There is no such thing as a contained sin. What may be seemingly small, and starts out small, will soon spread through our life & take control of us. It will affect every part of our being.
  3. There is no such thing as “an individual sin”. Your sin will have an affect on people. Sin is like an infection & it will spread & pollute those around us – our spouses, our children, our friends, our church.
  4. There is no such thing as a “get out of jail free” sin. There will always be consequences for our sins. God offers His forgiveness to us always & freely but sin does leave its mark on us.

Today may we be like David, who after his deepest & most grievous time of sin prayed:

Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.
Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.
(Psalm 51: 10-12 NLT)

My medicine cabinet is cleaned out & now looks like this:

Order has been restored. Much the way my heart feels after it has been rid of any secret & hidden sin. It is then that there is plenty of room for God to fill.

Done any cleaning lately?
