Today’s word prompt …. writer.
As soon as I saw the word prompt, I remembered.
We needed two elective courses in English to complete the requirements for English in order to graduate. Looking to be together in as many classes as possible, we discussed our choices for days walking to and from school. I preferred to take a class which might mean more reading but she so wanted this one as she had heard he was an easy “A”, very liberal and shared the funniest stories during class. She was my best friend and so I agreed to let her choose our first elective and she did – Creative Writing 101.
Years later, I still remember the class. He was quite creative and artsy. He encouraged us to write with a word prompt or an incomplete sentence which we would need to transform into a short story by the end of each week. The week would be spent writing and editing and reading our papers aloud to each other in class – all 14 of us.
Who knew then, years later, I would once again find myself writing each day. Early morning hours are meant for reading and to journal. It all began with a desire for my children to know what was in my heart and mind during those days of transition which were difficult for all of us. The words were never meant for the eyes of anyone but them.
Once I began, I found it was something I did not want to stop doing. Some days, I feel it is all I must do. And the dust bunnies which often float around on our wood floors testifies this is true. And so this morning, I find myself remembering:
“My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for the king; my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.” (Psalm 45:1, NIV)
And I pray, “Lord, may You give me the words for You alone can cause me to become a writer.”
As for Anne-Marie and I? We went on to also take Creative Writing 102 🙂

Ha, I love that you let your friend pick your elective class -I don’t think I could’ve done that! Still, sounds like it was a great choice! =D I love reading how people got started writing.
We were such close friends, wanting to take as many classes together as possible. With electives, it was actually easy & ended up being fun. It was truly a great prompt. I agree, it was great to read of how so many started writing. Thanks for stopping here!

Whenever I had an open class I filled it with an English elective. I discovered I had a flair for writing back in high school so took as many courses as I could. I really enjoyed learning from some wonderful teachers. Thanks for sharing.
English was always my favorite although it took me a while to truly realize how much I love getting words down. I always thought it was just reading I loved. It is words 🙂 So glad that you stopped & shared a few words with me! Have a great week!
