“If we believe that this life is temporary, that belief alone changes how we live it.” (from the book, Anything by Jennie Allen, page 135)
I recently went back to this book to reread my own underlinings and notes scribbled in the margins. This quote stopped me as it contained the one word I am focusing on this year – “Believe”.
Maybe it is as my birthday approaches once again, I realize anew how quickly time passes. Or to put it another way, how old I am becoming. I think of those who are already gone, trying to figure out how many more years are a possibility. There is no way to ever figure how much time one has left yet it is a sobering thought.
Life is short …
- “Man is like a breath; his days are like a fleeting shadow.” (Psalm 144:4, NIV)
- “Show me, O Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life.” (Psalm 39:4, NIV)
- “Remember how fleeting is my life.” (Psalm 89:47, NIV)
There you have it – life is fleeting – rapid, swift and transitory. There’s one other thing I am learning –
Life is also long ….
- “For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.” (Psalm 90:4, NIV)
- “The length of our days is seventy years – or eighty if we have the strength.” (Psalm 90:14, NIV)
- “With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.” (Psalm 91:16, NIV)
So how do we find the balance between days which are long and fleeting at the same time?
This question brings me back to the quote which began all this.
We must live each day, knowing life is temporary, while also believing the manner in which we live each day truly does matter.
The poopy diapers, the sniffling noses, the sibling squabbles, the tight finances, the illness, the struggles, the difficult relationships. The ups. The downs. The tears and the laughter. The piles of laundry, the sleepless nights. The gourmet meals and the ones we burn beyond recognition. The sticking it out when it seems it would be easier to walk away. And now the snow, the snow, the snow!
Yes, we embrace and believe He has purpose in it all.
“Now God has us where he wants us, with all the time in this world and the next to shower grace and kindness upon us in Christ Jesus. Saving is all his idea, and it is all his work. All we do is trust him enough to let him do it. It’s God’s gift from start to finish! He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing.” (Ephesians 2:8-10, MSG)
Every single one of your days matters.
Believe it!
Today I am joining … Testimony Tuesday and Titus 2 Tuesday and Unite and True Story and RaRa Linkup and Teaching What is Good .
“Believe” image was compliments of Traci Michele.
Visiting from the RaRa linkup! The one thing we can be sure of? He has our days numbered – we can’t shorten them or extend them! So, let’s enjoy them and bear good fruit for the eternal kingdom!
So very true. He knows our number. May we live them out to the fullest for His glory!
Every single day matters! Thank you for this beautifully encouraging reminder.
Even these days of snowy & windy blizzards 🙂
So true…..its hard to remember that life if fleeting when the days seem long with stuffy noses and sickness! Thanks for the reminder! #raralinkup
Those days surely seem the longest and yet one day, we all realize how quickly they passed. May we make each day count!
I really enjoyed how you put this. It puts it into perspective. There are long days of motherhood, but quick years of passage. Thank you for encouraging my heart in God’s timeline. I cheer you on as you convey some awesome truth! Thank you for joining Purposeful Faith’s #RaRalinkup!
Kelly, thank you for the encouragement. May all we do & say make a difference each day. Blessings!
Someone asked me what I believed and I said; I believe in Jesus Christ the Son of God the Father and the Holy Spirit Jesus sent to live inside us and to be our constant comforter. I trust and believe in God’s Word the Bible and accept it as Truth. I believe in the eternal reward for those who accept Jesus as Savior and that His eternal life begins in me at the very moment I accept Jesus as my Lord. I believe Jesus will return soon for those who have accepted Him as their Savior. Life on earth is short – – BUT life itself is eternal and it depends on our acceptance or rejection of Jesus where we will spend eternity. Thank you for sharing with us here at Tell me a Story.
Hazel, it’s so true. Life can seem so long & yet our passage through so quick. May we make a difference while we are here. Blessed to have joined you once again!
I love how you pointed out that temperal life is numbered and short but life is also long… because we “believe” in the eternal life promised by God! He uses it all… every single moment of our life matters. You said you have a birthday coming so happy birthday in advance… And Oh My Gosh yes, that is a lot of snow!!! Wow! Hang in there… Spring is coming 🙂
Blessings to you! Stay encouraged and keep writing
Danise, thank you for your encouragement. Each day truly does matter – even these snowy & windy ones. Blessings!
