Secret Sisters. The insert called this – “An opportunity for the women in our church to get together and be matched with a “sister” who will pray and encourage for two months without being known until the end of that time.”
When it was first announced, six year old Jocelyn was sitting alongside of me coloring as she typically does during the church service. Once the announcement was heard, I felt an elbow nudging me.
“Mimi, can you be my secret sister?”, she asked.
“Sure.”
“You will have to pray for me,” she informed as perhaps I may not have understood. “I will pray for you every day”, I assured.
Then came the point …
“And you will have to send me presents and cards.”
The moment is one I will never forget and have enjoyed each time I think about it. Jocelyn expressed the desire of us all –
We want to be loved, remembered, and seen.
The conversation has rooted deeply in my heart. We all need connection, a support system of those who will rally round us, root us on, and can be relied upon.
There are days we all may feel forgotten, unseen, or invisible. On those days, may we hold onto the promises of God:
- We are deeply loved. “I have loved you, my people with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself” (Jeremiah 31:3, NLT).
- We are never forgotten. “Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you!” (Isaiah 49:15, NLT).
- We are not invisible. “The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you” (Psalm 32:8, NLT).
These promises bring assurance and comfort. May we not keep them to ourselves. Send a card. Make a phone call. Even do it anonymously.
Let someone know they are loved,
remembered, and
seen.
Today I am joining … Inspire Me Monday .
I have participated in “Secret Sisters” at churches and loved the activities. Sending an anonymous letter, card or leaving a gift for the person to find is such a blessing. I enjoy sending snail mail, too. I know how excited I am to receive mail and giving other people that joy makes me happy.
Melissa, this was my first time participating in such an activity. Like you, I think many of us enjoy receiving mail. It seems with social media and the internet, the art of writing a letter or sending a card can often be lost.
So important! I do believe those three things are what each of us desire in our heart of hearts.
Loved the idea of Secret Sisters but haven’t had an opportunity to participate in a long time. How sweet your granddaughter wanted YOU as a secret sister!
Jerralea, she touched my heart so deeply and I hope I never forget!
Amen, and amen! Out of the mouths of babes. Each year at the end of outdoor school I have our students write a friendly business letter thanking someone who helped with the trip. This year, I’m having the staff write letters to the kids, too!
Oh my gosh, I love your idea, Anita. The kids will just love getting letters from the staff.
