Each Friday my writing stems from a word prompt. Five minutes, one word prompt. The prompt this week is … Promise.

The word has been defined as “a declaration that something will or will not be done or given; an express assurance on which expectation is to be based” (dictionary.com).

It was the second definition which had my attention. A promise is an expressed assurance which leads to an expectation. A promise gives hope, brings anticipation, and helps us to look forward.

If we combine a promise with a dose of faith,  we become confident God will do exactly what He has promised.

“Abraham never wavered in believing God’s promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God. He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever he promises.”
(Romans 4:20-21, NLT).

Abraham did not deny the reality of his situation – he knew his body was as good as dead as was Sarah’s. But he held onto the promise given him.

The word prompt reminded me today of the many promises God has given to us. A google search tells me there are 5,467 promises contained in Scripture. His Word has stood the test of time and God will continue to be faithful to every promise He has given to us.

The words of an old song came to mind:

“Standing on the promises I cannot fall,
Listening every moment to the Spirit’s call
Resting in my Savior as my all in all,
Standing on the promises of God.”

May we remember today the very One who has given us these promises
will also keep them.
We can hold onto His promises.
