It’s not that we don’t know how to pray. Prayer is a topic we will never be able to exhaust. Life often throws situations at us when we least expect it, bringing along with it another lesson in prayer.

When You Need to Move a Mountain, by Linda Evans Shepherd, is an encouraging book which explains intercessory prayer and how it makes a difference in both our lives and world.

There are eleven chapters, a few of which include praying for breakthrough, breaking strongholds, and winning battles. There are chapters covering praying for our families, for others, for provision, for healing, for our communities, pastor, churches, and nations.

The book is not a “how to” book, rather it is filled with stories of situations and prayers which encourage and will direct one to pray for similar circumstances.

Along with these stories, the author includes prayers and powerful quotes from other authors which were hope-filled and powerful. A few of my favorites were:

“Effective prayer is when the atmosphere changes from heaviness to peace. The change comes when we are changed, and our fear is swallowed up in faith. It’s when we realize that God is moving on our behalf, even when nothing in the natural confirms this belief.”
(Joy Schneider)

“Each time, before you intercede, be quiet first, and worship God in His glory. Think of what He can do, and how He delights to hear the prayers of His redeemed people. Think of your place and privilege in Christ and expect great things!” (Andrew Murray)

“There are parts of our calling, works of the Holy Spirit, and defeats of the darkness that will come no other way than through furious, fervent, faith-filled, unceasing prayer.” (Beth Moore)

If you are facing a mountain which needs moving, this book will encourage and teach you to pray until the mountain is moved. It is also a great resource for those times when you may not be sure just how to pray.

“Intercessory prayer is like the mortar in a protective brick wall. Prayer binds God’s promises into a fortress of protection … The real beauty of intercessory prayer is that when we pray, we are uniting with Jesus. We stand with him as he stands in the gap interceding for us, our families, our loved ones, our concerns, and our world.”

May our eyes be opened to the power of intercessory prayer,
so that we stand in the gap with our loved ones, a lost world,
and God’s Kingdom.
