He said, “No; rather I indeed come now as captain of the host of the Lord.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and bowed down, and said to him, “What has my lord to say to his servant?”(Joshua 5:14, NASB)

“Faced with the task of leading Israel against this land of seven strong nations, it is little wonder if Joshua were to feel overwhelmed. But here by Jericho he was given this vision. A Man with a drawn sword stood before him … He had come “as captain.”

Praise God, this is His purpose, to take His place as Captain of His host. We want everything to circle around us and serve our interests, but God will not have it so. He does not stand in the midst of conflict giving a little help here or there. For us the question is not one of receiving help, but of accepting leadership. You do not know God if you think He can occupy a subordinate position in the battle. His place is to lead. Only then will you know what it means to have His sword drawn on your behalf.”
