National Days. They are often a fun and silly way of remembering things, perhaps celebrating them. For instance, today October 31st is –
National Knock Knock Jokes Day.
Seriously, who knew? You probably thought I was going to say something about Halloween. But no.
Knock knock jokes. Those silly and ridiculous jokes every kid loves to tell, and our family was no different.
The years of driving my son to elementary school were ones familiar to joke books. He always had one, or two, sometimes three joke books with him in the car. Other times, it was Calvin and Hobbs who took the ride with us.
Those were the years when children were permitted to sit in the front seat. He would read them all the way to school and laughter filled the car. I’m still not sure if I was laughing at the actual joke, or at the sheer sound of him laughing till he was wiping his eyes. Either way, the joke books took many a ride with us.
One silly tweet, and one national day, rolled together to make me realize – let’s love and laugh deeply.
Our children are now adults, married with children of their own. Talk with our children now surrounds politics, news events, and religion. We don’t always see eye to eye on everything. There are days I long for the knock knock jokes as they were way funnier than some of our adult discussions.
Today my heart is filled with appreciation for the “ministry†of knock knock jokes in our family. I’m also remembering the teaching of Chuck Swindoll. I hope you will join me at Woman to Woman Ministries HERE for the rest of this post.
Joanne,
One thing I insisted on, in our family, is that we sat around the dinner table to eat. This was a place of sharing our days, our struggles, and the funny things that happened to us. To this day, when we sit around the table, it is a time for all those timeless funny stories to be brought out of the archives to be shared. The dinner table was also a place of prayer and a time to talk about God’s precepts — so much so that sometimes my kids jokingly referred to me as “Bible lady,” but God is faithful when we train up our kids in the way they should go. Knock-knock jokes — who would have known? 🙂
Blessings,
Bev xx
Bev, I so agree with you – who would have known? God in His grace and mercy knew and orchestrated every conversation. May we trust Him to now do with those memories as He wills in the lives of our families. xo
There’s something magical about kids and cars and honest conversations. Sometimes, car ride magic doesn’t happen, but when it does, it teaches us to listen deeper.
There is something amazing about those rides and conversations which I think teaches us all the lessons we so need in life.
“Orange you glad I didn’t say banana?” 🙂 What a great post. The best lessons I learned about God came through the examples my adopted family set for me in the way they lived their lives. Still, your post caused me to remember how our dad would always make us share “One new thing you learned today.” If we couldn’t come up with something, he’d direct us to go get the dictionary and find a new word. Loved the post ma’am.
J.D., I love that your dad would ask for something new learned. I bet a few trips to the dictionary made everyone come to the table prepared too 🙂 May we not overlook the lessons each day holds for us.
The honesty of children can teach us valuable lessons. Our five years old grandson likes knock knock jokes. He learns cute ones from his teacher. We are never to old to laugh and learn.
Since we’ve moved in to our daughter & son-in-law’s home, we’ve surely shared a lot more silly times with our young grandson. What sweetness to fill our days! Thanks for a smile this day, Joanne!
