In a perfect world, I would possess the power (aka – control) to keep my loved ones safe from all hurts and difficulties.

But I don’t live in a perfect world, nor am I a perfect woman. It does not take much for me to go down the slippery slope from anxiety to fear –

fear of something happening to one of my loves, or worse yet,
fear of actually losing one of them.

Yet the reality is there truly is not a single thing I can do to keep all of them safe at all times.

On those nights when I bolted straight up from worry, overcome to the point of tears, not even my husband’s embrace and soothing voice could calm my anxious mind.

In her book, An Imperfect Woman, Kim Hyland writes:

Anxiety is a powerful motivator – powerful enough to fuel a lifetime of striving. As women who seem to be programmed to love, nurture, and care for our families and friends, we are uniquely susceptible to anxiety and fear. Care that causes concern can transform worry in a millisecond. For some of us, that slippery slope is the only path our hearts know. But the rotten fruit of fear is destruction.

(from page 80)

The anxiety I felt was for nothing, as there truly wasn’t a thing I could do. The truth is – our worrying accomplishes nothing:

“Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And if worry can’t accomplish a little thing like that, what’s the use of worrying over bigger things?” (Luke 12:25-26, NLT).

The secret to experiencing peace instead of worry is found in this verse:

“The Lord is at hand. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” (Philippians 4:5-6, NKJV)

We must remember the Lord is close at hand.

The author further explains:

The rest of our reality is that we are not alone! Jesus is Emmanuel, God with us, His power and presence are our ultimate security. His love for us is sure and has been proven. (page 77)

We need to remember and call on God in those overwhelming times in full assurance He will respond:

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7, NKJV)

He has promised to give us a sound mind, a mind filled with His peace in spite of the circumstances.

The reality is we are imperfect women held together by our perfect God.
In the light of His truth, our anxious minds can be stilled.
