One of the greatest joys of my life has been that of motherhood. It has also been one of the greatest sources of frustration, tears, and pain. Every parenting journey has its ups and downs, peaks and valleys, laughter and tears.

And I would do it all again for it was all worth it.

Over the last few weeks, maybe with the anticipation of another grandchild and a walk through the baby section of Target, I find myself praying for the salvation of my grandchildren.

There is no more important prayer we can pray than for our children and grandchildren to be saved. I would even suggest to begin this prayer while yet pregnant.

Salvation is where it truly all begins and will end. Their start in life, as well as their end, all hinges on this one prayer.

Every dream and desire our children (and grandchildren) will have must come to the point of a life surrendered to God and His purposes for them.

So while this is the most important prayer we can ever pray, it is also the most painful. In praying this, we admit we cannot save them. They cannot inherit our salvation or enter eternity on our coattails. We will never be able to meet every need or satisfy them to the fullest.

As moms (and grandparents) we will fall short because it is Jesus they need most of all.

It has done my heart good to hear Jocelyn relate her Sunday School story of “Jesus and his people who were afraid in the boat” for her young heart is already beginning to learn that Jesus can calm every fear. As Sophia has sat, coloring and doodling during the sermon, her little elbow nudging my side when something strikes her as funny or important, I am reminded that even while appearing to be occupied, she is taking in every word she hears.

For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13, NLT)

May my grandchildren all call on the name of the Lord from a young age.

“But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were yet sinners.” (Romans 5:8, NLT)

May they know they do not need to do anything before coming to Him, for He loves them just as they are.

Prayer: Dear Lord, please guide my grandchildren, born and those yet to come, to Your gift of salvation from a young age. May they come to know you, walking closely with you all their days. Guide them in choices and decisions that will impact them for eternity. May they boldly pursue You, and You alone, each and every moment they are alive. I pray this in Your Name, Amen.

God is watching over my grandchildren.
I know because I asked Him to.
