Recently a series of devotional books for kids came across my path. The Lord’s Garden is a series of three devotional books for children, each one written by Diana Kleyn.

Taking Root is a devotional filled with stories about how God can cause a life to root deeply into the ways of God. Using the analogy of plants, the author shares stories illustrating how our lives are similar to gardens. The stories are from varied times and places, but with each discovering their lives changed through Christ. Each story has questions and a prayer to root the story into a child’s heart.

A few quotes I enjoyed were:

  • “Make me a light to those around me.”
  • “Give me safety in Jesus.”
  • “Teach me to pray – for myself and others.”

In the second book in the series, Bearing Fruit, one will find stories illustrating how the Holy Spirit produces fruit in our lives. Children will read and learn about godly character being formed through their actions. The stories are followed by questions and a prayer to help children learn the importance of having lives which produce the fruit of godliness.

Quotes from this book which I enjoyed were:

  • “Help me to be kind and compassionate to everyone, no matter who they are or what they look like.”
  • “Make me honest and trustworthy.”
  • “Help me to love and pray for those who are unkind to me.”

The third book is Sowing the Seed and brings to life the importance of sharing the Gospel with those around us. Again returning to the analogy of gardening and seeds, children will learn the importance of sharing about Christ and sowing seeds into the lives of those around us. Following the format of the first two books in the series, readers will again find discussion questions and a prayer at the close of each chapter.

A few quotes from this book which were enjoyed were:

  • “Help me to choose friends who will be a blessing to me. Help me to be a blessing to my friends.”
  • “Fill my heart with selfless love for others, just like Jesus.”
  • “Help me to be kind and loving to everyone, even people who are unpleasant.”

All three books are filled with stories sure to grab the attention and heart of young readers. They can be done in any order as each book and topic will stand alone. The stories vary in length but each one is endearing.

These make a wonderful addition to any family devotional time or library.
