Some Fridays, I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is: Unusual.

Unusual can be defined as uncommon or rare. We might even say it means not in a normal or typical way.

The prompt reminded me of a story found in Acts 28. There we find Paul landing on the island of Malta after enduring a storm at sea. Here is what occurred next:

And the natives showed us unusual kindness; for they kindled a fire and made us all welcome, because of the rain that was falling and because of the cold.” (Acts 28:2, NKJV)

There the people of the island showed them: unusual kindness, extending a warm welcome. Recognizing they were soaked to the bone and cold, they made a fire to warm the sailors.

My commentary tells me there were about 276 people along with Paul who came onshore the island. Amazing to think they were all welcomed.

“Unusual kindness” is the kind that goes a little beyond, slightly further than the ordinary kindness.

Unusual kindness will put us out. We may need to sacrifice or be inconvenienced to show this sort of kindness.

May the desire of our hearts be
to display unusual kindness
to those whom we cross paths today.
