When this year 2020 began in January, no one could have prepared us for all it would unfold. It surely seemed like an ordinary start to another year.

But this was the year we all would hear and learn words like “unprecedented”, “mitigation”, “quarantine”, “COVID-19”, “stay-at-home-orders”, and “remote learning”.

Perhaps it was my desire for the start of a new year, or more normal circumstances, but my search for a devotional and word for 2021 began to grow inside of me. I want to do more than cope or adjust to circumstances, I want to prevail.

The word “prevail” has been defined as: “to be or prove superior in strength, power, or influence ” (dictionary.com).

It was then the new devotional, Prevail by Susie Larson, crossed my path. The author grabbed my attention right in the introduction:

“God wants us to prevail – to prove we’re more powerful than our enemy. He wants us to overcome every battle with increasing courage and strength.” (from page 11)

Here we find a year’s worth of devotionals, 365 days, of encouraging words to encourage us to face these days with courage. We will discover how God equips us as He draws us close to Himself, to not only wage the battle but to also win the battle.

The devotional will take us on a journey through the word of God beginning with Genesis and going through to Revelation. Each reading is comprised of three parts:

  1. Learn. The scriptures to read and a short, encouraging thought are presented in this section.
  2. Flourish. Here is an action or question to think on to deepen your time with God.
  3. Pray. A directed prayer to guide your prayer time and day completes the reading.

Having read several pages, I am looking forward to working through the entire book. We need encouragement on how to overcome and stand firm in these trying and stressful days.

These devotionals come wrapped in a beautifully hard covered book which makes this the perfect gift for any occasion.
